Aztecs: 3 Must-see links to stir up curiosity

Mexico

Places are just places, if you don’t put a meaning to them. The cultural or historical context of the places I visit always fascinates me. Before visiting Mexico and its’ capital, I was looking for something to stir up my curiosity. Aztecs were the ones which caught my attention. This tribe lived in the humid valley, where the modern giant capital is. They made history with their cruel rituals of human sacrifice. Too bad. Because there was much more to this complex and mysterious civilization. Here are 3 links for seeing, listening and imagining what was happening, when the world was 1000 years younger.

Mexico City: The heart of Aztec Empire

Culture, Mexico

Lying just behind the main cathedral there was a huge pile of stones – all that is left from the giant Aztec’s pyramid. Half of its glory was stolen by the passing time, the other half – by the builders of the church. The ancient ruins were only discovered in the 70´s, when workers were making a trench. I stopped for a moment, thinking. Every stone had their story to tell. When the world was 15 centuries younger, in the place where I stand there was nothing. No concrete buildings, no people roaming the streets, only wilderness, swamps and a big lake Texcoco. A tribe called Mexico was migrating from the north searching for their promised land.
